If you’ve ever needed serious dental work in North America or Europe, you already know the pain doesn’t stop at the chair. It follows you to the invoice.
Dental work in the West is brutally expensive. So expensive that many people delay or completely avoid necessary treatment for financial reasons. And that’s how small problems turn into serious ones.
As nomads, we already leverage geography to lower our cost of living. We choose where we base ourselves strategically. So the question becomes obvious:
Why not apply that same logic to healthcare?
That’s where dental tourism enters the conversation.
Thailand and Mexico have been popular for years. But more recently, Turkey has positioned itself as one of the top destinations globally for high-quality dental work at a fraction of Western pricing.
Low cost of living. Devalued currency. European medical standards. Strategic location between Europe and Asia.
It’s a powerful combination.
And in 2022, I decided to test it myself.
The Experience
After researching dental tourism platforms and review aggregators, I narrowed things down and chose a clinic in Izmir called WestDent.
I reached out and explained what I was looking for: a complete smile makeover.
A few days later, they scheduled a video consultation. The call included a dentist and a translator. They walked me through the process and even gave me a live video tour of the clinic. Seeing the equipment and facilities in real time helped ease any lingering skepticism. It looked modern. Professional. Legitimate.
Within a couple of days, I received my quote.
It came in at roughly 20 percent of what I would have paid in Canada.
Twenty percent.
That was the moment it stopped being theoretical.
We scheduled the treatment dates, and I booked flights to spend a couple of weeks on the Aegean coast.
If you’re going to get major dental work done, you might as well do it somewhere with sea views.
Two months later, I landed in Izmir.
The clinic’s translator was waiting at the airport to pick me up. Normally, the clinic arranges accommodation for their patients, but as an experienced nomad, I had already booked my own Airbnb. They dropped me off there instead.
The next day, we went to the clinic for an initial inspection and x-rays. I met the dentists who would be handling my treatment. After reviewing everything in person, we made a few small adjustments to the original plan and scheduled the first procedure for the following day.
From there, the routine was smooth.
For every visit, I was picked up and dropped off at my apartment in a Mercedes van with leather captain seats. It felt less like a medical appointment and more like concierge service.
During my two-week stay, I had multiple follow-up visits. Not because anything went wrong, but because the team wanted to make sure everything was perfect before I left. That attention to detail stood out.
Throughout the entire experience, the staff exceeded my expectations. It felt like they cared more about the end result than maximizing profit per appointment.
That’s not something you always feel in Western healthcare systems.
The Results
The smile makeover itself was transformative.
Before the procedure, I used to cover my mouth when laughing. I was self-conscious about my teeth and avoided big smiles in photos.
Afterwards, that changed completely.
Now I smile without thinking about it.
The difference is night and day. And once the crowns settled properly into my gums, the result looked even more natural.
What surprised me most wasn’t just the aesthetic improvement. It was the confidence shift. Smiling more changes how you carry yourself. It affects conversations. Photos. First impressions. Even your baseline mood.
It sounds dramatic until you experience it.
The improvement in confidence alone made the trip worth it.
Final Thoughts

To be clear, I receive zero compensation from WestDent. No referral fee. No commission. This is simply my personal experience from June 2022.
Dental tourism is not something to approach casually. Do your research. Read reviews. Ask questions. Schedule consultations.
But if you’re already location independent and considering major dental work, Turkey deserves a serious look.
