The Aer Travel Pack 3 is one of the most popular travel backpacks among frequent travelers and digital nomads. It is built like a tank, designed for carry-on travel, and offers one of the best packing layouts I’ve used.
After years of traveling with different bags, this is easily the best backpack I have owned.

The bag officially holds 35L, though in practice it feels closer to 40–45L worth of usable travel space thanks to the layout and clamshell design.
First Impressions
The first thing you notice about the Aer Travel Pack 3 is how solid it feels.
The materials are extremely high quality. Thick Cordura nylon, strong YKK zippers, and a build quality that feels closer to military gear than most travel backpacks.
It also has a large clamshell opening, which is a big deal for travel. The entire bag opens like a suitcase, which makes it perfect for packing cubes.
Once I switched to packing cubes, this bag became incredibly easy to organize.
What Works Well
Huge Main Compartment
The main compartment is where the bag really shines.
The clamshell design makes packing extremely easy, especially with packing cubes. You can essentially treat the bag like a suitcase that happens to sit on your back.
For longer trips or digital nomads who move between cities, this layout is ideal.
Extremely Comfortable Straps
Despite being a fairly large travel bag, the shoulder straps are very comfortable and well padded.
Even when the bag is heavy, it distributes weight well across your back. Aer clearly put a lot of thought into the harness system.
Excellent Laptop Protection
The laptop sleeve is one of the best I’ve used.
It is heavily padded and suspended slightly from the bottom of the bag, which protects your laptop when setting the bag down.
For digital nomads traveling with expensive gear, this is a big advantage.
Build Quality
The materials are excellent.
The Cordura ballistic nylon exterior feels extremely resistant and durable. After long periods of travel, the bag still holds up well and doesn’t show much wear.
Overall, it feels like a bag that can handle years of travel.
What Doesn’t
It Gets Heavy
This is the main downside.
The bag has a large capacity, and when fully packed it can get heavy.
The straps are comfortable, but if you spend a full day moving through airports, walking between terminals, or navigating multiple flights, you definitely start to feel it.
After years of traveling with carry-on backpacks, this is actually what eventually pushed me to switch.
I now travel with a carry-on roller suitcase instead, mainly for airport days.
Backpacks are great for mobility, but hauling a heavy pack through airports for hours eventually gets tiring.
It’s Expensive
The Aer Travel Pack 3 sits firmly in the premium travel backpack category.
At around $249 USD (and closer to $279 for the X-Pac version), it costs significantly more than many other travel backpacks on the market.
The quality justifies the price in many ways, but it is still a serious investment for a bag. For budget travelers or people just starting out with travel gear, it may feel like a lot to spend on a backpack.
Bulky for Smaller Frames
Because of its boxy design and relatively large footprint, the bag can feel bulky on smaller travelers.
When fully packed, it sticks out quite a bit from your back and can feel oversized if you are navigating tight spaces like crowded trains or small airplane aisles.
This is less of an issue for larger travelers, but it is something worth considering depending on your build.
