Must have apps: Southeast Asia

Landing in a new country is exciting — but the first few days can feel chaotic if you don’t have the right tools. From ordering your first ride from the airport to getting food delivered after a long travel day, a handful of apps can make life in Southeast Asia dramatically easier.

The region has developed an incredibly efficient ecosystem of “super apps” that handle everything from transportation and food delivery to payments and everyday errands. For digital nomads, installing the right apps before or shortly after arrival can save time, money, and a lot of confusion.

Below are some of the most useful apps for navigating daily life across Southeast Asia — whether you’re ordering dinner in Bangkok, booking a ride in Bali, or finding your next apartment in Kuala Lumpur.

Food Delivery & Transportation

Grab

Grab is Southeast Asia’s dominant super-app for transportation and deliveries. You can book car rides, motorbike taxis, food delivery, groceries, and courier services all in one place. In cities like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City, it’s often the easiest way to get around.

Gojek

Gojek is a massive Indonesian super-app offering motorbike taxis, car rides, food delivery, courier services, and digital payments. It’s especially popular in Bali and Jakarta, where GoRide scooters are often the fastest way to move through dense traffic.

Foodpanda

Foodpanda is one of the largest food delivery platforms in Southeast Asia. The app connects users with thousands of restaurants and convenience stores, making it easy to order meals, groceries, and snacks directly to your hotel, condo, or coworking space.

LINE MAN

LINE MAN is widely used in Thailand for food delivery, messenger services, grocery delivery, and ride hailing. Integrated with the LINE messaging ecosystem, it’s especially popular in Bangkok for ordering from local restaurants that may not appear on other delivery apps.

Uber

This one is pretty obvious, but Uber remains the king of ridesharing, even in Southeast Asia.
Uber also offers food and grocery delivery in select countries.

Bolt

Bolt is a popular rideshare app operating in many cities worldwide, including parts of Southeast Asia like Thailand. Similar to Uber, it lets you quickly request affordable rides through your phone, often offering competitive pricing and short wait times in major urban areas.
